Azure new RemoteApp - Cloudify your desktop applications

CaptureLast month Microsoft released a number of great enhancements to Microsoft Azure. These include:

  • Premium Storage: New Premium high-performance Storage for Azure Virtual Machine workloads
  • RemoteApp: General Availability of Azure RemoteApp service
  • SQL Database: Enhancements to Azure SQL Databases
  • Media Services: General Availability of Live Channels for Media Streaming
  • Azure Search: Enhanced management experience, multi-language support and more
  • DocumentDB: Support for Bulk Add Documents and Query Syntax Highlighting
  • Site Recovery: General Availability of disaster recovery to Azure for branch offices and SMB customers
  • Azure Active Directory: General Availability of Azure Active Directory application proxy and password write back support

 

Let's talk about RemoteApp

It permits to deploy Windows desktop applications in the cloud, and provide your users with an intuitive, high-fidelity, WAN-ready remote application experience. Users can use the cloud-hosted Windows applications you enable on their phones, tablets, or PCs. Today we are going to see how to push Office application but it could be whatever you want.

So the first step is to create an ISO image of your server RDSH with your application preset. You can find different resources on the web to pass this step or you can use an image already in the Azure store. So I've install a Windows Server 2012 R2 and Office 2013. Then I've sysprep the server. At this step I've my ISO. I must create my RemoteApp and upload my ISO.

Once you got your Image do this: New -> Services Application -> RemoteApp -> QuickCreate

Just give a name to your deployment and select your image. Then click on "Create RemoteApp Service". After few minutes your service should be created.

At this step you can publish your applications. So go on RemoteApp and select the service that you just have created. Click on "Publish Tab" and select the application you want.

Go in "User Access" tab and enter email address of users autorized to use the application you want. Of course those accounts must be in Azure AD. The account can be sync from your AD with Federation Identity.

Now we are going to test our application. To do this you can get the client here : Microsoft Azure RemoteApp

You will see your apps "My application". If you start your application you will see a small icon on top of Office icon. This icon indicate your application is in the cloud and not in local.

Those application can now run on any device supporting RemoteApp Client. So you could imagine use your applications on windows phone 10.
