“I Wish” was a campaign conducted by GSX Solutions that approached IT professionals to voice the types of new solutions and improvements they would love to see developped in a near future. This study was organized to better understand the needs and daily struggles of System Administrators and IT professionals. The research was conducted using several resource channels, including social networks, customer feedback and major Microsoft events across the world: TechEd North America 2013, TechEd Europe 2013, TechEd Australia 2013, TechDays Paris 2013 and the Microsoft Management Summit 2013.

Gathering this information will help the industry more easily understand the major challenges faced by Administrators and produce better fit solutions for these concerns.

According to Gartner, Microsoft is one of the most influential and dominant players in the technology industry and has been for many years. The PC world is dramatically changing towards Web-based application models, cloud computing and a shift towards mobile devices. To face the numerous challenges posed by these changes, a high level of investment in engineering must be maintained to continue answering market demands and beyond.

What if we could easily say what we want, where we want it? How can we influence the businesses?

The results have been compelling and have presented a clear understanding of what the Microsoft community wants and needs.

Based on your answers, we identified four critical needs for Microsoft applications:

  • Better release management. While Microsoft’s release improvements have helped reduce the impact of upgrades on users, deploying the latest release does not always go as smoothly as expected.
  • Smoother Migration. Key migration challenges were encountered when consolidating data on virtualized servers, reducing migration impacts on end users, designing and validating architectures.
  • Cloud migration concerns. Respondents felt that they were not ready to migrate 100% of their infrastructure and workloads to a public cloud, citing security and service reliability as key concerns.
  • Lack of advanced reporting. Many participants indicate that the absence of advanced reporting and analytics in System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), requires them to turn to third party solutions to meet their needs.

Nearly 1,000 wishes were collected in the United States, Europe and APAC.
