If you haven’t already checked out the first round of exciting announcements at this TechEd2013, be sure to check out what’s coming on Exchange, Visual Studio and TFS.

This year’s keynote announced new features for Windows Azure and gave us some insight about what the SQL Server 2014 will be capable of.

Windows Azure

During the "Transform the DataCenter" portion of the Keynote, Microsoft put a strong focus on Windows Azure to really catch our attention. They even launched a drawing to win an Aston Martin for those activating Windows Azure when you submit the MSDN subscription.

Here are the Windows Azure Announcements:

  • It’s now free to stop VMs
  • Per minute billing is now available
  • Credits will be offered to MSDN partners
  • This will allow DEVs to have more resources (VMs, databases, etc.)
  • Updated Windows Azure Management Portal
  • Windows Azure pack for Windows server (learn more here)
  • This will allow better consistency across clouds
  • Cloud Innovation
  • Deduplication Storage
  • Faster live migration thanks to compression

SQL Server 2014

SQL Server 2014 announced:

  • In-Memory OLTP
  • Enhanced in-Memory Column Store
  • Enhanced "always-on"
  • Cloud backup available

They showcased these new capabilities by conducting a demonstration on an Application developed for frequent flyers. They stress tested the platform and moved it to use the new "in-memory" feature of SQL 2014. Performance increased by 30 in terms of transactions per second. Here is more information on what to expect from SQL.

What are your thoughts on the updates for Windows Azure and SQL 2014? Do you think they missed something important that should have been addressed?

All in all, it was a great week at TechEd in New Orleans. We had a great time talking with attendees at the booth and attending insightful sessions. Now it's time to head back and start the countdown for TechEd Europe!
