In my last article, I showed you how to monitor your application. Now, it is time to receive information based on your efforts. So let's move on to reporting...

Here we are going to create a simple dashboard. If you need reporting, you will have to create it with Report Builder.

  • Choose where to store the dashboard (you can select the folder dedicated to your App)

  • Choose your layout structure
  • Specify which information you want to be part of your dashboard (so just add one performance counter)
  • Choose who has access to the dashboard. It is useful if you plan to publish this on the web or SharePoint.

You are finished. Now, you are able to see that your application is working. Additionally, you can see how it works on the server side (very well - most of the time) and on the client side (so, how the end user experience is).

If you experience slowness in your application, you will receive alerts. Just search for them in the code level to see where the issue is.

Operations Manager 2012 provides the ability to locate the alert in the code to see exactly what is going on and where the issue is.

In conclusion, the integration of .Net Performance Monitoring in SCOM 2012 is really useful, and the setup is fairly simple. Once that data has been collected, the Operations Manager incorporates IT Analytics to enable you to analyze the APM data in a fast and flexible manner. This gives you the insight you need, when you need it! However, you will still need to create your dashboard and reports manually.
