- A Multitenant Architecture
GSX Monitor & Analyzer for Exchange is first based on an automatic discovery of the entire environment.
The Exchange Overview screen gives an overview of the Exchange architecture by automatically finding our about your servers and clusters.
It also gives an overview of the configured Exchange Scenarios and Spot Check Reports whether it is on-premise or in the Cloud.
With this intuitive console, IT Administrators have a full control of the overall availability of their messaging environment in real time.
As an IT Manager, you need to avoid any slowdown performance to limit complaints from Business line about the IT infrastructure.
To stay aware of the fundamental user experience, GSX Monitor & Analyzer allows you to simulate the user in running multiple scenarios, which represent his day-to-day tasks that includes:
- Opening a Mailbox
- Creating meetings, tasks and folders
- Downloading attachments from an email
- Searching for folders, email , appointments and tasks
- Creating and sending email
These scenarios can be performed simultaneously on different versions of Exchange. This means you can run them on Exchange 2010, Exchange 2013, Exchange Online or on a Hybrid environment from one environment to the other!
Simulating classic day-to-day activities like checking the execution time of the Exchange services represents multiple tasks such as opening a Mailbox, opening a document stored in a folder, etc. Checking the execution time of the entire sequence of each action is crucial to manage the performance of critical activities for a Business Line.
With GSX, IT Administrators monitor each activity for organizations running on either Exchange On-premises or Online.
Monitor Exchange Windows critical services
Each Exchange role relies on dedicated critical Windows Services that must be available on the Exchange server. Depending of the role, GSX Monitor automatically discovers them and monitors them. Read more details on the monitoring of the Exchange Windows Services Webpages.
Multiplatform capabilities Exchange, SharePoint, BlackBerry
The Exchange overview is dedicated to your Exchange environment providing you instant view on the availability and the possible issue on that platform.
But as you may know, GSX Monitor & Analyzer allows you to monitor multiple type of environments with the same GSX instance and everything without any code on the server.
Hence, GSX is able, at the same time, from the same workstation to monitor the Exchange environment (2007 & 2010), the BlackBerry environment (all version at server and cluster level), Active Directory and LDAP (through user simulation), SharePoint (Scenarios, availability) and URLs.
Scanning engine from GSX is simple to use and extremely powerful. You can define the scanning frequency, the retry in case GSX Mnitor finds any error, the time zone of your server in case of multiple time zone locations, and the business/off hours.
Business hour is critical if you want to define different set of alerts.
The scanning engine will then proceed to all the tests you have configured, checking the performance threshold on every pre-set period, on your entire servers. It’ll collect at every check all the statistics you need in term of availability, performance and usage, for all the platforms you want to monitor, at the same time and, without any code on the server you want to monitor.
If an error occurred or a threshold is exceeded, an alert will be sent. When the situation is back to normal, you can be notified as well.
Alerts Engine and Repository
The Alert Engine has been developed to give you all the flexibility you need into a friendly user interface that optimize the configuration.
You can create as many profiles' alerts as you need, combining all the options GSX provides to the user.
GSX can alert you by:
- Email distribution list
- Any program running on the VM / Workstation
- Pop Up Message on any workstation
- SNMP Trap to any supervision / ticketing tool like SCOM
- Direct SMS if a modem GSM is configured
Every type of alert can be combined to give a maximum flexibility. You can then add a severity level to the alert profile, a reminder to be alerted every X minutes until you fix the problem or an Escalation profile that will warn another team or tool if the problem is still here after a designated period of time.
All these alerts are automatically sent to GSX Analyzer and can be used as a repository for your alert if you don’t have one already.
Directly from this view, you can export reports of your Alerts in PDF, for example, or you can manage them taking action on them (alert in progress, resolved, by who, when, how, etc.)
Your server has regular maintenance that you schedule in order to guarantee the update or the health over time. During this period, you don’t want to be overloaded by constant alerts on service down!
GSX gives you the ability to define your maintenance windows in order not to alert you for nothing and also to be able to sort your statistics of availability. Again, you don’t want your SLAs or general measure of availability to be impacted by your maintenance operations. GSX will sort the statistics depending on Normal Hour and Maintenance Hour.
GSX provides instant critical graphs on the last 3,000 scans for every performance, system and usage statistics you need. These graphs are critical for troubleshooting problems in your Exchange Infrastructure or to determine exactly when you have peak of charge for example. Administrators have to know when the latency happens in order to correlate this information with the number of user connections, for example, or with system information.
Disk Space Alerts
GSX allows administrators to set up proactive storage alerts on disks attached to any Exchange server, for when the available space is below a certain number of MB or percentage of the disk. Statistics are displayed in Real time Graphs and in GSX Analyzer to provide historical and forecast on metrics.
GSX Monitor and Analyzer constantly checks the availability of the Active Directory / LDAP and SMTP service via multiple ways:
- End user Exchange scenarios that use the AD / LDAP service (MAPI connectivity for example)
- End user scenarios that use the SMTP service (Mail Routing scenarios for example).
- Dedicated end user tests that use only the AD / LDAP or the SMTP services- it consists in a real connection on the dedicated ports to use the service as a user (connection to AD / LDAP to make a request and retrieve the results, connection to SMTP to measure the ability to send a mail).
With the line of tests done by GSX Monitor, you can be sure that these critical services are always up and running in your environment.
GSX Analyzer Overview and Statistics View
Let’s take a look at the common features of GSX Analyzer, again for every server, every environment you want to report.
GSX Analyzer first presents an overview of your entire environment. It can be Exchange and SharePoint and BlackBerry and Mail Routing test, and URLs, and so forth.
The access to GSX Analyzer is fully customizable. You can configure access for a profile to see only a set of servers or set of tabs (Overview, Alerts, Statistics, Log Reports, Trend Reports and Environment Health) that you define.
The GSX Analyzer Statistics View provides a complete view of all the statistics collected by GSX Monitor
Depending on the role of the selected server, you’ll see the accurate statistics of availability, usage, performance that you can export in CSV and PDF in one click.
Trend Reports , Environmental Health Reports and automatic reporting
GSX Analyzer Trend Reports view enables you to make historical trend or forecast and automatic reports in PDF.
These trends are available for any statistics that are provided by GSX Analyzer for reporting purposes. Full description of the set of out of the box statistics available here.
The Environment Health view allows comparing the availability of roles, servers, to compare performance or usage within the infrastructure.
This powerful tool is mostly used to quickly identify bottlenecks in your infrastructure and ease the sizing of your Exchange environment.
A Multitenant Architecture
Multitenancy has become a truly fundamental technology within cloud computing, revolutionizing the landscape of the IT world. Exchange infrastructure in hosting company is often compounded of multiple Exchange organization that belongs to different customers.
PowerShell SSL authentication
GSX logs on the Exchange server with PowerShell to produce its scans. In the Wizard, the Administrator can now set up an account, which will work with PowerShell SSL and gives a secure way to connect on multiple domains. PowerShell uses the Http protocol. Thanks to SSL, GSX uses the HTTPS (secure) protocol and allows a connection without having to trust the AD domain.
