Department of Commerce Awards Steel Demand Study
PITTSBURGH, PA – October 27, 2004. The United States Department of Commerce (DOC) has awarded a contract to study and model the future demand of steel to Management Science Associates, Inc.(MSA). Congress instructed the DOC to conduct a study of future demand for steel based on concerns raised by US steel producers and steel service centers related to the perceived "shrinking" of the domestic manufacturing sector. It has been postulated that the shrinking domestic manufacturing sector coupled with import pressures of steel and steel-containing goods could erode the demand for domestic steel. MSA will undertake an exhaustive quantitative examination of the long- term demand for steel within the United States. The study will consider the expected demand for steel-using products and services, the substitution of alternative materials and lighter weight steel by steel using industries, and the impact of imports of steel containing products. The study will also address the question of the extent to which the recent 2002-2003 downturn in demand for steel was the result of short- term cyclical conditions or a result of a long-term trend. In addition to the quantitative analysis, MSA will provide a computer-based model for use by the Department of Commerce. "We are excited and enthusiastic about being chosen to perform this study," said Patrick J. Gallagher, Vice President of MSA's Metals and Advanced Manufacturing group. "MSA is uniquely qualified to lead this effort because of its extensive experience and background in market analysis and sophisticated model development, coupled with its strong domain knowledge of steel-producing and steel consuming industries. With our long history as a system and service provider to the steel industry, we trust this effort can aid policy makers and individual companies in maintaining the strength and vitality of this important market segment." ABOUT MANAGEMENT SCIENCE ASSOCIATES, INC. Incorporated in 1963, MSA is an international leader in marketing, strategic analysis, decision-support analysis software and process/business automation systems. MSA is privately-held and often identified as the first firm to evolve from Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School of Business and its innovative efforts to expand the role of quantitative analysis in business. With 900 employees throughout the world, and its 42 years of experience in providing secure data collection, data management, ERP, disaster recovery and avoidance, applications hosting, and e-business and analytic services, MSA has from its outset provided forecasting services for individual companies and entire industries.
