MSA Providing Meltshop Blending Optimization System to Carpenter Technology Corporation

PITTSBURGH, PA - August 20, 2007 - Management Science Associates, Inc.'s (MSA) Metals and Advanced Manufacturing Division is providing a Meltshop Blending Optimization System (BOS) to Carpenter Technology Corporation (NYSE: CRS) of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. According to Patrick J. Gallagher, MSA Metals Division Vice President, the BOS includes several blending optimization models applicable to the meltshop facility, including an individual heat charge model, a planning model, and an alloy addition model. The optimization models used in these applications will determine the most cost effective mix of raw materials required to meet the identified chemical, schedule, and residual constraints.

The BOS will be integrated with Carpenter's new Primary Melting Manufacturing Execution System (MES), a larger initiative that will integrate primary melting operations production information with an execution control and data acquisition system.

"We are very excited to work with Carpenter Technology on this project," stated Gallagher. "They are an excellent candidate for MSA's state-of-the-art optimization models. Carpenter's long experience with optimization models in its facility enables them to fully comprehend and take advantage of some of the sophistication and abilities of our models, which employ the latest techniques in mathematical programming," stated Gallagher.
