MSA To Provide a Melt Shop Automation System To Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc.

PITTSBURGH, PA - August 3, 2009 – Management Science Associates, Inc.'s (MSA) Metals and Advanced Manufacturing Division has received a contract to design, implement, and commission a Melt Shop Automation Project (MAP) for Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc. (USAP) in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the MAP is to improve the information and automation capabilities of the primary melting and raw materials operations at USAP's Bridgeville facility. As a result of this effort, it is anticipated that improvements will be made in on-time delivery of product, increased throughput in the melt shop, better decision-making tools for operations, streamlined enterprise-wide communication, and better accuracy and timeliness of production information, resulting in increases in quality and profitability. MAP is part of USAP's previously announced $13 million investment to upgrade the equipment, automation, and plant layout at its Bridgeville melt shop.

According to Patrick J. Gallagher, MSA Metals and Advanced Manufacturing Division Vice President, the MAP system that MSA will provide will include MSA's Blending Optimization Software Suite (BOSS), including optimization models for purchase planning, multi-heat campaign planning, charge design, alloy additions, and under-crane optimization. It will also provide Level 2 systems at the scrap yard, EAF, ladle trim, and teeming stations, as well as integrating these systems with USAP's existing purchasing and financial systems.

"We are delighted to be awarded this contract by Universal Stainless," stated Gallagher. "USAP's bold and confident decision to move forward with a major capital project during this difficult economic time is a testament to strong leadership and vision. This is the type of company with which MSA enjoys being associated."

"MSA's expertise and experience in melt shop automation and optimization were an important consideration when selecting a vendor for this project," explained Mr. Bruce Kramer, Director of Purchasing for Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc. "We are pleased with the MSA – USAP team's efforts so far and look forward to a successful project implementation."
